Alternative view of Winery Tour at Potomac Point WineryCalling all wine enthusiasts! As members of our Wild WoMan and D’Vine clubs, we know that you enjoy drinking wine but have ever tried blending it? This unique opportunity, exclusive to our members (and their guests), gives you the chance to try your hand at blending wine. Come and join us on one of our challenge days where our very own winemaker, David Pagan Castaño, will lead you through the art of blending wine. You will get an authentic experience with access to the tank room, where the wine is created, and of course some gourmet snacks. You then are put to the test and face other guests of the event to see who can master the perfect flavor. One winner will be selected, and this custom red wine blend will be bottled and included in the club member’s July shipment. Not only will the other members be able to enjoy your masterpiece, but you will also get to help name it! So don’t miss out on this awesome experience, gather a friend and get to blending!

Challenges are taking Place on June 7th and 14th from 11:00am- 1:00pm. Tickets can be purchased online.

Note: wear casual comfortable clothes that may get wine on them. Do not drink coffee or any harsh/spicy items, a pure palette is best.

Blend your own wine!

Blending AwayIt’s official: our first Club Blending Challenge yesterday was a smashing success! David, Potomac Point’s head winemaker, and Skip, the owner of the winery started the afternoon out by leading attendees through a crash course on creating different wine blends from only a small selection of base varietals. It’s truly amazing how many vastly different creations can come from only about 6 different types of grapes! At that point, it was time for our guests to try their hand at blending wine themselves, and that’s when the fun really began. Every seat was equipped with several glasses, measuring equipment, and all of the supplies needed to do a good bit of trial and error (as well as a place to dump out those attempts that didn’t quite turn out right), and that’s exactly what our honorary winemakers did. After about 30 minutes of experimentation, each team decided which of their creations they wanted to submit, and it was time for our judges to deliberate!

It was no easy task, but our panel decided on the blend created by Tresss, the team comprised of Casey and Stephanie Travers, Fernando and Sylvia Medina, and Mike and Stacey Lauter. David and Skip then walked the winning team through how to create enough of their blend for the whole room to taste. Our other three teams, the Wildlings, the Grapenuts, and Vino de Equipo created fantastic blends as well and a good time was had by all, which was the most important part! If you didn’t make it out here yesterday, there’s still a chance to join in on the fun and you most definitely don’t want to miss out! There will be another Club Blending Challenge on June 14th where a second winner will be selected, and the two will go head to head to see which blend lands in our July club shipment. You can read a little more about the event and purchase tickets here, and we can’t wait to see you this Sunday!

Chrianti and beach balls ladies and crabs

It appears that the dog days of summer might finally be in our rear-view mirrors!  Temperatures are becoming a bit more bearable, humidity is on the decline, and slowly but surely, the days are becoming just a little bit shorter.  In our opinion, there’s no better time to get outside and enjoy the season, and we have an awesome suggestion on how to do just that!  Join us on August 30th for a day of food and fun at our 3rd Annual Crab Fest!  Spend the day soaking up the sun or relaxing in the shade down at our Picnic Pavilion and taking in the picturesque views of our very lush, full vines just before harvest!  Warm up your throwing arm because our yearly cornhole competition is back by popular demand, and most importantly, come hungry!  That’s right, bring your appetite, because your ticket is going to get you all the crabs you can pick, a delicious plate of savory barbecue, and all the goodies that come along with a traditional low country boil; sausage, potatoes, corn, you name it, it’ll be here!  This is definitely an event you don’t want to miss, and to ensure that you don’t, snag your tickets today!  This is a really popular day here at The Point, and we have to cap the guest list at 100, so heading on over to the link below and buying your ticket now will guarantee that you’re included in that count!  We can’t wait for this fun-filled day we’ve been anticipating all year to finally get here, and we hope to have you join us!

Have you been touched by cancer? A note from the owner…

“I have not met a single person who has not been touched by the devastation of cancer. I have personally been punched by losing my Dad to cancer right before we opened the winery. He made the journey of research with us, checking out wineries all over the Commonwealth and compiling our business plan. He would wrap his bear like arms around me to comfort me after a loan rejection and say tomorrow is another day…..

You may have seen the “George’s row” sign that sits atop the trellis in the Merlot section of the vineyard. This is the row he planted, so weak from fighting but so excited for our adventure. Our community is filled with stories of loved ones who need the support of Hospice.

September 27 is the annual “Grapes in the Garden” hospice fundraising event. All the proceeds go to pay for the therapy and programs directly benefiting our community. I have been on the planning committee for 4 years now, committed to do my part for an organization that we relied on to get us through one of the most emotionally difficult time in our lives.”

This event is held in the beautiful Snowden Gardens in Fredericksburg. There will be five wineries, five restaurants and JF Fick providing our beverages and nibbles. Potomac Point will be selling tickets at the register area from now until the event or you can purchase tickets online here; it is $50.00 in advance. Checks may be written to Mary Washington Hospice. Please come out and support this great organization.

Harvest Festival Vendors

0

Planning for our 9th Annual Harvest Festival is well underway, so mark your calendars for September 26th because it’s definitely going to be a day to remember! We have a slew of amazing vendors lined up to come show off their creations and plenty of fun activities planned. This year, guest winery Ingleside Vineyards is coming to show off their delicious selection of wines, which you will be able to taste on-site and purchase to take home with you if you fall in love. Check out www.inglesidevineyards.com for more information on their venue, and stay tuned to find out who our surprise second guest winery will be!

In addition to being able to taste our wines and those of our guest wineries, we will have tons of delicious food choices on site to keep you filled up all day long! Our very own Chef Oz has been working hard to come up with a delicious Le Grand Cru menu just for Harvest Festival featuring some delicious fall-time fares that you can order from our Bistro. We will also be hosting Fat Mike’s, a local food truck serving up some delicious gourmet burgers, hot dogs, cheesesteaks, and southern fried treats such as pickles, green beans, and mac and cheese! We will also be hosting a brick oven pizza truck, so don’t fear, there will be something here to satisfy every taste! With that being said, have you ever tried our wine ice cream, made fresh out of our Dolce Rubus raspberry merlot? Are you as in love with it as we are? If so, you’re in luck! Butterfield Ice Cream, a.k.a. the folks who make that delicious treat for us, will be here serving up some of their incredible creations, so bring your sweet tooth! And what could possibly pair better with ice cream than cake? We can’t think of a single thing, so luckily Heaven’s Gate Catering has decided to come out and bring a selection of their amazing pound cakes with them for you to try! Get ready to do some taste testing and if you just can’t get enough, consider joining their Pound Cake of the Month Club!

On top of that, if you’ve ever ordered a cup of coffee in our Bistro and wished you could enjoy that exact same warmth and flavor in the comfort of your own home, you’re in luck because Sharpshooters Coffee will be on site selling their fresh coffee grounds, which we happen to use right here at Potomac Point! Once you’ve had your fill of lunch and/or dessert, there will be plenty of goodies available for you to purchase and take home. VY Goodard and Sprelly will be here at The Point selling their incredible homemade honeys and gourmet nut butters, respectively. The Cottage, the company who makes the beautiful slate cheeseboards that we sell in our gift shop will be here showcasing her creations, which also include some adorable jewelry! Lori Craddock is also very crafty when it comes to jewelry and is bringing along some of her cork and grape themed designs, as well as some delicious fruit jams that she concocts using wine!

Don’t start thinking the fun stops there though; we have plenty in store for your furry friends as well. That’s right, Harvest Festival is totally dog friendly, and the folks from Paddy-Whack will be bringing along some of their incredible homemade dog treats for your pup to enjoy! After all of that, if your sweet tooth still isn’t satisfied, stop by Joy. Bliss. Raw. for a taste of some amazing organic chocolate that’ll certainly leave you wanting more. If you’d like to take something home with you that’ll last a little longer than chocolate or pound cake (come on, we all know you’re gonna eat it that night…) then Bob the Barrel Builder is the man to visit! Most of the barrel furniture pieces you see around The Point, from our bistro tables, to our outdoor fire pit, were his creations, and he will be at Harvest Festival coming up with some one of a kind designs just for you! If you’d like some unique and beautiful barrel décor to keep in your own home, definitely stop by his booth. Many more vendors will be set up for you to peruse from 11:00am-5:00pm.

Along with some amazing vendors for you to peruse, we have plenty of entertainment and activities planned throughout the day! Come out between noon and 4:00pm to hear Pete Baker play some incredible live music, and bring your own lawn chairs and blankets if you’d like to sit and make a concert out of it! We’ve also got the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries coming to teach archery and fishing to kiddos and adults alike, so make sure your outdoorsy side comes with you on the 26th! Aside from all of that, we will be having a moon bounce (for all ages), inflatable skee ball, pumpkin games including bowling and decorating, face painting, grape stomping, and plenty of lawn games to make this year’s Harvest Festival one for the record books! Check out the link here to purchase your tickets now. This event is a popular one so you’ll want to make sure you’re ready to roll when September 26th comes around!

The Best of the Best: Jonathan Little Receives “Outstanding Food Service Employee Award”

0

We are so proud to announce that our very own Jonathan Little has been selected as the recipient for the Outstanding Food Service Employee Award from the Fredericksburg Regional Hospitality Council! Jonathan has been in the hospitality industry for over 9 years but Potomac Point has been lucky to have him for the past 4 years. Starting out as a server in 2011, Jonathan became our lead server and is now our Banquet Captain.
The Fredericksburg Regional Hospitality Council is a non-profit organization that focuses on maintaining an excellent experience for tourists in the Fredericksburg area. Each year they host an Awards Luncheon to give recognition to employees, teams, and venues that show outstanding service to their guests and other co-workers. Numerous industries nominate an employee to be recognized for their work but as few as four awards may be given that year, making the competition high!
Jonathan has been praised by close to every guest that has visited Potomac Point, and has been described as “attentive, personable, and always smiling” and always having a glass of wine ready for his guests! His coworkers have proclaimed him to “live, breathe, sleep, and eat” his job. He is always there to not only complete his job but to be involved in every aspect of the winery- from the tasting room, to events, to serving. His name has been specifically mentioned in many public reviews to explain what a great asset he is to each guests’ experience at Potomac Point. Congratulations on the recognition you deserve, Jonathan! We are grateful to have you here!

Celebrity Wine Dinner Winner

cooking

On February 18th and 19th Potomac Point Winery hosted a Chef vs. Chef Celebrity Wine Dinner!  It was a fun and memorable experience, unlike any wine dinner we’ve done before.  Our very own Le Grand Cru Head Chef, Dean Hill, took on Celebrity Chef, Elise Wims “Diva Chef”, from Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen, Bravo’s Apres Ski, and NBV’s Food Fighters.

food

Each Chef developed a three-course small plates menu consisting of an appetizer, entrée, and dessert.  Catch was, both chef’s had to create each course to pair perfectly with specific wines chosen by our head wine-maker, David Pagan Castaño.  David chose Chardonnay Reserve 2015 for the first course, Vino Caminio NV for the second course, and our new Reserve Port NV for the third course.

The best part was- our guests decided the winner!  Diners filled out a secret voting ballet after each course to determine the champion of the evening.

Only the attendees knew the outcome, until now…

Saturday Evening’s Results:

First Course Winner… Dean Hill

Second Course Winner… Elise Wims

Third Course Winner… Elise Wims

Overall Winner… Elise Wims!

Sunday Evening’s Results:

First Course Winner… Dean Hill

Second Course Winner… Elise Wims

Third Course Winner…Elise Wims

Overall Winner… Dean Hill

Since the steaks were so high and each chef had taken home their trophy, we counted votes from both evening to determine the overall winner of the chef vs. chef wine dinner challenge…drum roll please… The overall winner from both nights was Le Grand Cru Chef Dean Hill!   Both chef’s did an amazing job and our guests had a blast.  Keep an eye out for more fun events from Potomac Point Winery.
